The 11 Steps of a Pool Shot Routine

The 11 Steps of a Pool Shot Routine

These 11 steps are primarily derived from the instructional content of Shortstop on Pool and Dr. Dave Billiards. Both are premier experts in the billiards community, and I highly recommend checking out their channels and supporting their work if you want to elevate your game.

Why exactly 11 steps? This routine was directly inspired by the classic "11 Steps of Shooting" traditionally taught in archery and posted at ranges worldwide. The infographic summarizes the routine, with a detailed breakdown provided below for additional context.

Note: This was created with the only intent to use as a personal training tip-sheet. This is part of an ongoing study of an effective shot routine.

1. CHALK AND ANALYZE

Build your rhythm by chalking while determining cue ball path, speed, and spin.

2. ALIGN VISION CENTER

Stand squarely behind the shot, placing your dominant eye alignment precisely on the line of aim.

3. COMMIT

Freeze entirely while standing up to lock in your "shot picture" and commit to the decision before moving your feet. (Moment of Stillness #1)

4. SET AND DROP

Set your foot alignment, step into the shot and drop your upper body straight down while keeping your eyes locked on the object ball and your vision center precisely over the shot line.

5. SETTLE INTO STANCE

Freeze the instant your bridge hand hits the cloth; allow your body weight, stance, and cue stick to completely settle. (Moment of Stillness #2)

6. FIDDLE AND ADJUST

Check your alignment while down and make minor micro-adjustments to perfect your tip placement. (Stand completely back up if a major change is needed).

7. WARM-UP STROKES

Execute smooth, feathering practice strokes corresponding to the intended speed of the shot.

8. QUIET THE EYES

Lock the cue stick completely still right at the cue ball address point. Use this 1–2 second pause to shift your gaze to the target on the object ball and verify your aim one last time before pulling the trigger. (Moment of Stillness #3)

9. SLOW BACKSTROKE

Pull the cue stick back in a slow, smooth, and controlled motion.

10. DELIVER/FOLLOW THROUGH

Drive the cue straight forward through the ball, completing a smooth follow-through without dropping your elbow.

11. FREEZE

Stay down on the table, holding your head, body, and cue perfectly frozen until the target ball drops and all motion ceases. (Moment of Stillness #4)
